What can a volunteer do?

1) Trained teachers

Volunteers with teaching background and experience who could help with the following in the school during school term (see below): 
  • Mathematics, English, Science, IT and sports
  • Introduce reading culture and help kids with reading
  • Introduce best practices in teaching and new methodologies
  • Sports, Music or Drama, Art & Craft (as means of conveying serious educational message), for those without teaching skills.

First term           16 Sept 2008 - 18 Dec 2008
Second term     13 Jan 2009 - 16 Apr 2009
Third term         12 May 2009 - 30 July 2009

Volunteering at the Atorkor school shall be during term i.e. the times when school is in session .

2) IT specialists

Volunteers who could help with one or more of the following:
  • Introduce the teachers and kids to use of computer, email, Microsoft office and internet
  • Teach how to print, scan, upload and process images & video, laminating
  • Enhance the IT centre and undertake some basic IT administration and maintenance work
  • Hands-on coaching in basic computer repairs and maintenance
  • Teach basic web design

3. Medical professionals

Volunteers with medical background and experience who could help with some of the following:
  • Public health & health screening
  • Preventive health education including hygiene
  • Health demographic survey
  • Assist the local staff in examination  and treating patients

4) Business or management students or entrepreneurs

Volunteers (or interns) with business, management or entrepreneurship background, who could help us with our micro-finance project and address some of the following:

  • facilitate the steady growth of the micro-finance initiative
  • Basic business and management training to people with very little or no education, who cannot read and write (translators shall be available)
  • Hands-on coaching of the micro-finance groups
  • Raising funds for the micro-finance project
  • Promote products made by the micro-finance groups

5) Project management

  • Coordinate ADF cooperation with Ghana based NGOs, Institutions 
  • Support and monitoring of ADF projects in Atorkor
  • Project Management coaching
  • Help execute and initiate new projects

6) Fishing expert

  • Fish farming feasibility
  • Raise funds to set up a pilot fish farming
  • Analysis of existing fishing processing in the village and recommendations
  • Evaluation of setting up fishing cooperative in Atorkor

7) Other areas

  • Documentary, Cultural Preservation, Performing Arts
